5 TIPS FOR DESIGNING YOUR SPACE
- CRAFT A COMPELLING VISION – It may seem rudimentary but having a complete vision for your space is an invaluable asset when it comes to defining the goals for your space and communicating with your contractor. Consider creating a vision board with photos, materials, and examples of the ideal elements for your space. Use resources like Instagram, Pinterest, Google, YouTube and your own photos to refine and illuminate your personal style and preferences.
- MEASURE YOUR SPACE – Taking rough measurements of your space will be helpful during the pre-design process to give you a better idea of what elements might work best in your space before you get on the phone with a contractor. Of course, your contractor will take their own measurements, but taking your own will empower you with information during the pre-design or “vision crafting” phase of your project.
- CONSIDER ACCESS TO YOUR SPACE – One of the questions your contractor will ask you is how they will access your space. For instance, if you are designing a backyard, how will the contractor gain access to it with tools and equipment? Is there a water source or hose bib close by? Is there a 120V power outlet available nearby? Is there a gate or fence that limits access, and if so, what is the width of the gate? Are there any structures or parked vehicles that may prevent or limit access? These are a few of the questions to consider regarding access to your space. A space that is more difficult to access will, more than likely, add to the price of your investment.
- PHASE YOUR PROJECT – Depending on your available resources you may choose to break a large project up into smaller phases to spread your investment out over a longer time frame. That is a common and completely acceptable way to approach larger projects. If you find this concept interesting, you should consult with your contractor about your phasing options at the beginning of the design process. Having a complete vision as described previously is not imperave, but it’s helpful to maximize the value of your overall investment.
- FORM AND FUNCTION – Arguably the most important consideration when designing your space is deciding how it will be used – form vs. function. More than likely your space will have more than one singular purpose. But it’s important to identify what you will use the space for most frequently. Ask yourself questions like: Will I be primarily cooking, eating, and entertaining? Will I be primarily lounging? Should it accommodate children or just adults? How will I move through the space? Do I need shade or rain cover? Do I want the space to feel warm and cozy, elegant and luxurious, open and airy, fun and playful, rustic, or something else? Consider whether you already have existing utilities, like gas, to accommodate your desired appliances. Think carefully about how you want your space to function. Do this first, before you go to the trouble of designing all the fun stuff, to ensure that the form will complement the function of your space. The last thing you want to do is create something beautiful, then find out later that it doesn’t really work for you the way you hoped it would.
